The macular hole is a small tear or opening that forms in the macula, the central region of the retina responsible for fine, detailed vision. Causes of macular hole may include aging, eye trauma, or retinal diseases. There are several treatments to repair the hole and improve vision.
HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE SICK: THE SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of a macular hole generally appear as:
Blurred central vision: difficulty seeing clearly in the center of the visual field, affecting tasks like reading or recognizing faces.

Visual distortion: Objects appear distorted or wavy, with straight lines appearing curved.

Decreased ability to perceive fine details: precision vision, such as reading small print, becomes difficult.

Dark or empty spots: presence of empty areas or dark spots in the central field of vision.
Sometimes these symptoms progress slowly.
HOW IT IS CURED: TREATMENT OF THE MACULAR HOLE
Treatment of macular hole is usually done through surgery, with vitrectomy being the most common method.
After surgery, the patient is often required to maintain a specific position, and eye drops are prescribed to promote healing.
Vision may gradually improve, but complete recovery may take several months.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Surgery for a macular hole begins with a vitrectomy, where the vitreous gel is removed to relieve traction on the retina. The surgeon repairs the hole by inserting a gas or silicone bubble to press on the macula. Regular follow-ups make it possible to monitor recovery and the effectiveness of the treatment.
After macular hole surgery, the patient may experience discomfort and temporary blurred vision. He or she will need to follow post-operative instructions, including maintaining a specific position, often with the head tilted downward, to help the macula heal. Eye drops are prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent infections. Follow-up visits are necessary to monitor healing and assess vision progress. Full recovery may take several months, with gradual improvement in vision.
