EYE ULTRASOUND

WHEN DO WE NEED: EYE ULTRASOUND?

Ocular ultrasound is not used to diagnose symptoms per se, but is performed to assess the following symptoms:

• Blurred or altered vision: Difficulty seeing clearly, which may indicate internal problems requiring further evaluation.

• Persistent eye pain: Ongoing discomfort or pain in the eye that may require investigation for underlying causes.

• Retinal detachment or hemorrhages: Signs of retinal detachment or hemorrhages, such as flashes of light or spots in the field of vision.

• Changes in peripheral vision: Changes in peripheral vision that may indicate internal abnormalities of the eye.

• Abnormalities observed during eye examinations: Unexpected findings during other eye examinations that require more detailed evaluation.

HOW DOES IT TAKE PLACE: EYE ULTRASOUND?

During ocular ultrasound, a conductive gel is applied around the eyes, and a transducer is placed gently over the eye to capture internal images. Sound waves create detailed images displayed in real time on a screen. The results are then analyzed by an ophthalmologist to diagnose any abnormalities. The exam is quick and non-invasive, and the patient can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

THE FOLLOW-UP OF THE INTERVENTION

After an eye ultrasound, the patient may feel some slight discomfort from the conductive gel, but this disappears quickly. There is no recovery period necessary, and the patient can return to normal activities immediately. The results of the examination are analyzed by an ophthalmologist to determine the presence of any abnormalities. A detailed report is usually provided to guide next steps, if further treatment or tests are needed.
